Counselling is a talking therapy that involves a trained therapist who provides a safe and supportive space for you to explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviours, with the aim of helping you find your own solutions to the issues causing you distress.
There are many different types of counselling including; behavioural, cognitive, person-centred, and psychodynamic. To find out more about the different therapeutic approaches and which might work best for you, please visit BACP website: https://www.bacp.co.uk/about-therapy/types-of-therapy/
Counselling can help with a wide range of issues, including anxiety, stress, depression, loneliness and isolation, bereavement, self-esteem and trauma. Counselling is a very personal experience and will look slightly different for each client; this is your 'grey space' and if you decide to work with me, we will journey together in your way, and at your pace.
In our sessions we aim for change; closer to where you want to be, and how you want to feel, with a greater understanding of self.
I am not going to lie to you; counselling can be hard work. Some days you will leave our sessions feeling worse than when you walked through the door; other days you will leave feeling lighter than you may have felt in months.
The hope, and my intention, is to support you throughout this process, with the heavier moments becoming less and the lighter periods being more sustainable.
There really is an infinite number of variables that could influence the length of therapy; the issue you wish to examine, how long it has been a problem, previous exploration, emotional capacity, and distance between where you are and where you want to be, can all shape your therapy journey.
Short term or solution focused therapy can be hugely beneficial for some clients with a specific aim, whilst others may prefer or require longer term therapy when the destination is less clear.
My approach is tailored to the client with you as an equally collaborator in the process and I always aim to be honest about what we can achieve, in the time we have together.
If you decide to contact me, we would arrange a 15 minute free assessment which is an informal discussion, where we mutually asses how we may work together.
Should you decide to proceed with therapy we would organise our first counselling session where we would talk about how your feeling, what you would like to be different and where appropriate agree a 'road map' of how we may journey there.
What we focus on will vary depending on your presenting issue, but we may explore:
